Are You On Track?

January 24, 2011

January is almost over. How are those New Year Resolutions that you made over 3 weeks ago coming along? Are you happy with your commitment and determination or are you feeling like you are repeating 2010? Did you tell yourself it would be different this year? Did you believe it would be?

Most of us have incredible dreams and aspirations we would love to see come to fruition but we lack a clear plan to implement them and see any worthwhile results. We write down our goals and maybe a sketchy plan but find ourselves wrestling with choices that become uncomfortable so we back down.

How can we break through and do the things that are uncomfortable in order to achieve the results we want? Well, let me give you 3 suggestions that may help you along this path.

1. Get clear as to what it is you want. What does that look like to you? There
are many ways to do this but my favorite is to create a vision board. Cut
pictures from magazines and from the internet of those things you want to
have and do in your life. Paste these pictures on a board or a sheet of
paper where you can see them regularly. Note: these goals should carry
with them a strong, positive emotional charge. Ask yourself, “When I
achieve these results I will feel______.” Not, “If I achieve them I will
feel_____”. Be confident that these goals will become a reality for you, and
stay away from mere hoping and wishing.

2. Develop a plan of action that details the steps you need to take to make
these dreams a tangible result and not a mere wish. If this step seems
overwhelming, find someone to help you with it. Hire a coach or ask a
friend to hold you accountable to doing what you say you will do. You will
want someone who will take a ‘no excuses’ approach and be honest with
you (a little tough love).

3. Take Action. Once you have your plan it is imperative that you take action
immediately. Know that you have the resources and knowledge to do this
and begin by doing at least 5 things every day that will lead you in the
direction of your goals.

Yes, it will be uncomfortable and will stir up some unsettling emotions. My mentor once said to me, “You need to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” It’s the way you need to live; the mantra you need to live by. As your ego will try to keep you safe (it doesn’t want to feel the pain of advancement so it will try to hold you back) you will need to keep your goals and your commitment to them front and center. Focus on the result you want and move through the discomfort. This is the only way to self-mastery.

So my challenge to you is re-evaluate your goals for 2011 and get started on these steps today.
